More than 150 students got a heaping helping of career tips with all the toppings at a recent ice cream social hosted by West Coast University-Ontario’s Career Services.
“It was an amazing way for Career Services to interact with students early and help them navigate their career plan,” WCU-Ontario Career Services Director Michelle Meitner said. “Through strong community partnerships, Career Services is able to share with students employer expectations such as building their skills through volunteering, becoming a (certified nursing assistant) and maintaining their (grades).”
Besides two scoops of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or rocky road, Career Service staff sprinkled in some advice to WCU students like stressing the importance of maintaining their GPA to stand out as a new graduate registered nurse.
“Employers use GPA to screen initial candidates,” Meitner said.
Career Services also dished out information about how BSN students can apply for their CNA license after completing fundamentals. Working as a CNA, Meitner said, helps students gain experience working with diverse populations, strengthens customer skills and teaches teamwork. Many healthcare organizations look to promote from within, she added, so Career Services encourages students to work in a healthcare position as they move through their BSN program.
Resources for volunteer programs at area hospitals, which helps students develop essential communication and leadership skills, were also provided.
“Students are encouraged to utilize Career Services throughout their BSN program to set career goals, develop their resume and practice for interviews,” Meitner said.
