150 Students Attend WCU-Miami ‘Men in Nursing’ Event

More than 150 students from West Coast University-Miami attended the campus’ Men in Nursing event this March, and got a chance to listen to alumni and other working nurses about what life is like after graduation.

“It was an excellent event,” WCU-Miami Career Services Director Georgeta Railic said. “The students really, really enjoyed it, especially the alumni panel.”

The Men in Nursing keynote speakers were Baptist Health South Florida manager Robert Hare for the morning session and Steven Ruppert, director of surgical services at Kendall Regional Medical Center, at the evening session.

The featured alumni speaker was Steven Lujan, a PICU nurse at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

The alumni panel consisted of Jean Tiresiast, ICU nurse at Holy Cross Hospital; Jose Plasencia, an ER nurse at Jackson Hospital; and Carlos Hernandez, an ER nurse from Baptist Hospital.

“You could tell the students were very engaged when they got to ask the alumni about their jobs and specialties,” Railic said. “I don’t know who was more excited, the students asking the questions or the faculty who attended to got to re-connect with their former students and support them as peers.”
