More than 100 West Coast University-Los Angeles nursing students celebrated the culmination of their studies this November by sharing a little advice.
After their pinning ceremony at the Sportsman’s Lodge on Nov. 9, the new graduates talked about their past experiences with volunteering and their hopes for what’s next, while also providing some words of wisdom to future students.
WCU-Los Angeles graduates Dennis Monahan and Roland Meridom shared their plans for the next five years in their nursing careers. Monahan hopes to be a critical care nurse in the intensive care unit, and “maybe even float to the emergency department” while Meridom wants to continue working at Children’s Hospital.
“I hope to work my way up in promotions, and get my master’s to hopefully pass on my knowledge to the next generation of nurses,” he said.
Vincent Vargas was also able to volunteer because of WCU and helped the Korean and Filipino senior citizen communities of Silver Lake.
“Without West Coast, I wouldn’t have that opportunity helping them out with basic health prevention, making sure they’re on top of their diet and their medications,” he said. “It was a good time.”
WCU-LA graduate Carmin Rubio also volunteered on the side at other hospitals to build his resume, get experience and figure out what he liked about nursing and working at hospitals.
“Always hit the ground running,” Rubio said. “You only have one chance to make a good impression and it’s never fun to play catch-up, so always be ready, always be prepared and always be motivated.”
