More than 100 students and graduates from West Coast University’s Center for Graduate Studies had an opportunity to meet and speak with 17 recruiters about employment and volunteer availabilities at the Fall Career Fair.
Aida Topalian, the campus Career Services director, said there was a recruiter at the three-hour event for each and every program at the Center for Graduate Studies — from doctor of pharmacy, master and doctorate programs of occupational therapy, and doctorate of physical therapy.
“What I want the students and graduates to take away from today is the networking aspect of connecting themselves with outside industry professionals,” Topalian said. “Take the time to really get to know about what the industry needs are, what kind of opportunities are in the field and how they can start early with their job search.”
Craig Yokoi, a talent acquisition specialist for the Los Angeles Unified School District, came to the career fair looking to fill openings for occupational therapists, physical therapists and school nurses. He said working with LA Unified had several perks that hospitals can’t offer, including long summer and winter breaks. When it comes to interviews, Yokoi said, he trusted his eyes and ears more than the applicant’s resume.
“What comes through mostly is personality. You look for someone who has a great personality, someone who is outgoing and someone who just really enjoys working with kids,” he said. “Be yourself because eventually your true self shows and we want to make sure that you’re the best you can be right off the bat.”
