What brought you to WCU as a student?
My friend Katie Jo was in dental hygiene school and asked me to be her patient. Upon multiple visits for treatments she suggested that I go back to school and become a hygienist myself. Being in sales and marketing for many years, I thought it would be a great time to better myself and finally put my GI Bill® to some good use.
What is the most important thing you learned while you were at WCU?
The most important thing I learned while at WCU was being able to believe in myself once the journey came to an end and watching my classmates and I earn our bachelor’s degrees.
What was your most memorable experience at WCU and what did you take away from your time at WCU?
The most memorable experience while at WCU was every time I was able to work with patients on the clinic floor while getting inside tips from all the faculty on giving the best treatments per patient possible while getting real-life empathy experience. What I took away from this was being able to use this in the dental offices on each patient that sits in my chair.
If you could give one word of advice to our WCU students, what would it be?
Tenacious. Always do what you can to stay the course through the good times and bad, the tough times and easy ones, and each time you feel there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, it’ll be there before you know it so long as you stay tenacious about what you want as you’re given the tools to get you there while at WCU.
How are you involved with WCU currently?
I’m currently involved with the veterans of SVO – student veteran organization, the PAC committee, and the Alumni Association.
What does #WCUproud mean to you?
WCUproud to me means being part of something bigger than just myself, an association that goes above and beyond for the graduates during and after their time at WCU, a faculty that keeps in contact to make sure you’re staying the course in your career and even sometimes personal, and being part of a family like no other…
Why do you think it’s important for our alumni to stay involved with their alma mater — whether by attending an alumni event, volunteering their time or giving to the alumni scholarship fund?
I think it’s important to stay involved because you get what you put into it and so much more
Would you like to share a positive message with current dental hygiene students?
Times will get tough, sometimes overwhelming, but know that you’ll join a profession that’s like no other.
