WCU Graduate Spotlight: Fernando Ramos

Thanks to West Coast University, Fernando Ramos is ready to take the next step.

Ramos, the class speaker at WCU-Ontario’s bachelor of science (BSN) in nursing pinning ceremony in February, said he chose to attend West Coast University after a lot of research and “wasting about six months” trying to enroll into a local community college’s anatomy class.

Tired of losing time and not wanting another associate degree, Ramos enrolled into WCU’s BSN program.

“I realized if I was going to go back to school I’d want to earn my bachelor degree so I did my research and I realized how structured WCU was,” Ramos said. “I appreciated the fact that as soon as your first day you knew what classes you’d have each quarter. You know exactly when you start, exactly when you finish and exactly what classes you’re taking in between that time, so being a very organized and structured person, I really appreciated that and that was one thing that truly drew me to West Coast University.”

At the BSN pinning ceremony at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center, Ramos said WCU helped prepare students by providing great leaders in both the classroom and clinical environment. Ramos also appreciated what he called the “state-of-the-art” simulation center and equipment.

“But the best way that West Coast University helps prepare you for being a nurse is honestly the clinical setting. They have contacts with outstanding hospitals throughout the area and it’s that clinical time that truly reinforces all of our learning and helps us build the stepping stones to success. West Coast University really stands out in comparison to other universities,” he said.

Ramos’ time at WCU has also taught him that earning his BSN should allow him to take his level of care further than the “A, B and C” of medicine due to his increased knowledge and experience.

“Going through a bachelor program, it prepares you for steps A, B, C, D and E,” he said. “It really gives you the full picture and it reinforces concepts that would otherwise not be enforced in other nursing programs. I think that’s the strongest point that West Coast University has.”
