West Coast University-Orange County kicked off the new year by having one of its students recognized by an international program that honors and celebrates skillful and compassionate nurses.
Lily Pham is the very first student at WCU-Orange County to be nominated and receive the DAISY in Training award. Professor Rebecca Feltro nominated Pham and presented her award.
“I taught Lily three terms ago. During that time I had to take a leave of absence due to a family emergency,” Feltro said. “Lily sent me an email that was so compassionate and heartfelt, it truly touched me. She treated me like I was family. She demonstrated the kind of compassion nurses have at the bedside and for that, I believed she deserved to be recognized.”
Pham was recognized at a ceremony at her campus and received a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch.”
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. After his death, Patrick’s family felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way and the DAISY award was their solution.
