WCU Nursing Students Join International Honor Society

More than 200 West Coast University nursing students in California and Dallas became part of an international organization of distinguished nurse leaders after joining The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International.

“Sigma Theta Tau International has been around more than 90 years and at West Coast University we have our own chapter — Chi Beta,” STTI chapter President and WCU faculty Melanie Cross said. “This is how nurses have a global voice. Sigma Theta Tau International has a seat at the United Nations and we, for more than 90 years, have celebrated excellence in nursing, knowledge, service and leadership.”

At the Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel in Brea, more than 120 WCU students plus friends and family packed in the main hall for the cording ceremony on Aug. 20. WCU Dallas students will receive their cords in a separate event in October.

Sigma Theta Tau International was founded in 1922 and the society’s name comes from the meaning of the Greek words StorgeTharsos and Time: “love,” “courage” and “honor.” STTI has more than 500 chapters and 130,000 members worldwide.

Membership is by invitation only and undergraduate and RN students must have completed half of the nursing curriculum with a 3.0-grade point or higher and rank in the upper 35th percentile of the graduating class in order to become a member.

Cross called STTI membership “an opportunity for our students to network internationally” and urged people to check out Chi Beta’s web site to view the chapter’s activities.

“Chi Beta has done an excellent job in meeting the UN Millennium Goals and we have focused on ending child trafficking,” Cross said.
