Twenty-five nursing students from West Coast University had the honor this May to participate in an event for the veteran and homeless population of Miami.
Under the watchful eye of three WCU instructors, the students took blood pressure readings and helped educate about 90 homeless and veterans at Operation Stand Down 2017, WCU-Miami Professor Angela Arocha said. Other amenities provided at the annual health fair included free haircuts and clothing, access to showers, food and legal advice.
“Everyone was very appreciative of the students and the medical service they provided,” Arocha said. “The students described it as being a rewarding experience and that they would definitely volunteer for another community event in the future.”
This is the second Operation Stand Down that WCU-Miami students have been invited by the city of Miami and “The 22 Project” to participate at. This year, WCU was the only nursing school to attend.
“I believe that our students and instructors are making an impact in the city of Miami when we participate in these events and, most importantly, we are serving a vulnerable population that really needs our assistance,” Arocha said.
