Nursing students at West Coast University-Miami had a chance this October to meet representatives from one of the largest pediatric hospitals in South Florida and learn about its new grad programs.
“The quality of the graduate nurse that we’re looking for is really about their smile, their personality, their initiative, their wittiness, their critical thinking, their motivation, their passion,” Susan Fornaris, a director of nursing operations with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, said. “And we do really want someone to be involved and committed to our organization, our patients, our family and will really be an active participant in our organization moving forward.”
The Horizon Nurse Residency Program is specifically designed to guide new graduate nurses by bridging nursing education and nursing practice. Nurses are given in-depth orientation through didactic curriculum, interactive online modules, simulation and hands-on training with preceptors. The result is a gain of increased proficiency and clinical experience across multiple specialties. The residency may last anywhere from four to 10 months, depending on the specialty.
Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, formerly Miami Children’s Hospital, operates South Florida’s only licensed specialty hospital exclusively for children, with more than 650 attending physicians and over 130 pediatric sub-specialists. The 289-bed nonprofit hospital is renowned for excellence in all aspects of pediatric medicine and is one of the largest employers in Miami-Dade County in 2014 with more than 3,500 employees
