37 WCU DPT Students Head Into Fieldwork With Fresh White Coats

West Coast University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program held a white coat ceremony for 37 students on March 1, at the WCU-Center for Graduate Studies in Los Angeles. The white coat presented to each student marks the entry into their clinical rotations, the final step before gaining their DPT.

The ceremony began with a welcoming message from DPT program director Dr. Teressa Brown.

“We are so proud of our students for working so hard to get to this point,” she said. “We are excited to see all that they accomplish during their clinical rotations.”

After listening to a keynote address by Mariam P. Butler, students were called up one by one to receive their white coat and take the oath of a physical therapist. The oath contains the values and obligations of a physical therapist.

It states, “In the presence of my colleagues, friends, families and teachers, and in view of the honored profession I am entering into, I solemnly and willingly state that I dedicate myself to the following… Thus, with this oath, I freely accept the obligations and rewards which will accompany my practice of physical therapy.”

After the ceremony graduate Edwal Pierre reflected on his experience at WCU and the future.

“I chose West Coast University because I felt like this was the best place to make a difference,” he said. “WCU helped pave the way and gave me the mindset of being great in my career and the future.”
