Relaxation

Planning for relaxation is important for our overall well-being. When it is time to sit down and create a monthly schedule, carve in a spot for relaxation. I always say, “If I don’t plan for it, it will not happen.” Relaxation can have physiological, emotional and mental positive benefits to your stress levels as well as your overall outlook on daily routines.

Rethink errands/tasks

Getting things accomplished like: grocery shopping, walking the dog and changing the bed sheets are some of those needed errand/tasks. These are viewed as important tasks that we like to have completed regularly. It might be helpful to rethink how often, who completes these tasks and when the tasks need to be completed by. Relaxing the expectations in your errands and tasks may help in your overall weekly schedule. Be open to being flexible and reschedule these items as necessary.

Exercise

Ah, the exercise. A brisk walk with a friend, a spin around the block on your bike or a yoga DVD at home all help to: reduce stress, clear the mind, let go of negative thoughts, release important hormones, etc.

Be honest

Being honest with yourself is important while you are prioritizing, planning for care of your family and working out the details to accomplish work and school expectations. Re-establishing boundaries with people in your life, letting go of people who take up too much of your time or reaching out for additional resources may be some areas that need your honesty in order for your schedule to work best for you.

Prioritize

Write down all of your priorities. Let the list run as long as necessary. Circle the ones that carry your top priorities. Put an (X) next to the ones that carry the lowest priorities. Use a (–) mark for the ones that sit somewhere in the middle. Now, you have 3 groups of priorities. Weigh each item in percentages. For example: From my circled group I have 5 items:

Circled: My son-35% Groceries-15% Pets-10% Work-20% Homework-20%
(X):  Laundry-15% Study-10% Car-15% Dusting-15% Walking the Dog-10%
(-): Exercise-30% Self-40% Date night-20% Paper Due-25%  Relaxing-20%

Complete this task for all three groups. Then, align those tasks that will make up closest to 100% per day to equal a full 5-day week. This is an easy way to see your priorities, make any necessary adjustments and stay in line with your weekly duties
