Julie and Tyler Lopez are at different places in their careers, but both mother and son agree that West Coast University-Dallas is the right place for their education.
The family recently moved to Dallas so Julie could start her BSN program. Julie, a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), is enrolled in the LVN to BSN program at WCU-Dallas, and works at a local hospital part-time in addition to being a full-time student. She started as a CNA and medical assistant before completing her LVN.
“It’s just my niche I guess,” Julie shares.
Instead of enrolling in a new high school for his senior year, Tyler decided to complete his GED and enroll at WCU-Dallas like his mother. He said he's looking forward to starting his career as a nurse, and following in his mother’s footsteps.
“Since I’ve been good in science, I thought nursing would be a good career choice,” Tyler shares. “I’ve had a pretty good time so far.”
As for what inspires Julie in the nursing field, Julie shares that a recent patient experience really influenced her.
“I had a patient last night who decided to stop all cancer treatment. Just being there and being part of her support team, it's emotional. It’s an emotional career. A lot of tears, a lot of hugs," she said. "And a lot of smiles too.”
Julie’s motherly advice to Tyler? “Study. Stay on track. Put your heart into it.”
It’s safe to say that compassion definitely runs in the Lopez family!
