Students Learn Valuable Lessons While Volunteering at Special Olympics

Posted on 06/02/2014

West Coast University students volunteered at the Special Olympics in Santa Clarita on May 17th, 2014. Seventeen students came out to help out for the day. The students helped organize the opening ceremonies and lined up over 600 athletes for the parade. After the parade the students ensured that there was plenty of water and sunscreen for the athletes while they competed in athletics, basketball, and the young athletics program.

Community service and volunteer work are key to the WCU student experience. As giving and caring for others is such a large part of nursing, these events prepare students for experiences they will have throughout their career in nursing. WCU instructor Melanie Cross, who organized the volunteer effort for the students, said "I am really feeling good about this 'crop' of soon-to-be nurses."

Melanie organized and prepared the WCU students for the days volunteer work. This is not the first time that Melanie has made sure WCU students are making a difference in the community. She frequently sets up volunteer opportunities for students to ensure that they are prepared for the giving nature of a nursing career. Students learn valuable lessons and often have a chance to connect with local hospitals and organizations where they may be applying after graduation.
