Post-Master's Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate

Why?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for nurse practitioners is expected to increase by 45% between 2019 and 2029, much faster than average.1

Prepare to take on these new nursing opportunities with our 2-year post-master’s certificate program. Graduates of the Post-Master's FNP online program should be prepared for positions requiring the following skills of a primary care advanced practice nurse:

  • Manage the health/illness status of patients and families over time

Our post-master’s certificate programs are designed for working professionals with asynchronous online classes that let you study when and where it’s convenient for you.

Our streamlined curriculum allows you to earn your certificate in as little as two years.

Get access to one-on-one support every step of your journey, from no-cost tutoring and writing center to a designated Student Success advisor.

Gain hands-on experience through 650 hours of practice experience through clinical placement practicums.

Participate in two on-site intensives (OSIs) lasting three days each. The OSIs bring students and faculty together for experiential learning, including demonstrations and hands-on practice to help students master skills and develop confidence.

*Program requirements include two (2) 3-day On-site Intensive (OSI) weekends and precepted hours in order to graduate. Students enrolled through the Orange County campus must complete their OSI’s in California and students enrolled through the Dallas campus must complete their OSI’s in Texas. Travel costs are not included in tuition and fees, and students are responsible for arranging transportation. Graduates will be able to apply for certification with the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) through "Method One", for more information about certification application requirements, please visit the California Board of Registered Nursing at, https://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/applicants/np-app.pdf.

Travel is not included in tuition and fees.

Admissions Requirement

Applicants for the Family Nurse Practitioner (Post-Master's) Program must: 

  1. Have graduated from an accredited master's or doctoral program in nursing.
  2. Have a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0
    1. Applicants with a cumulative graduate GPA of 2.7 to 2.99 may be considered for admission on probation, but must achieve a "B" (3.0) or better in the first nine credits in the certificate program to be removed from probation. Students who do not achieve a "B" or better in the first nine credits will be dismissed from the certificate program.
  3. Have a RN license in CA or be eligible for RN licensure prior to clinical practicum courses.
    1. One year of full-time work experience as an RN. (One year recent clinical experience recommended.)
  4. Pre-requisite coursework: Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacology, and Advanced Physical Assessment within the last five (5) years.

In addition to meeting the admissions requirements stipulated above, applicants to the Family Nurse Practitioner track must also:

  1. Receive a recommendation for admission from the Graduate Nursing Admissions Committee following an interview. As part of the admissions process, applicants must submit an original essay for evaluation. Past academic performance and professional activity will be evaluated, e.g., community, organizational, and volunteer service, as well as creative professional accomplishments.
  2. Applicants to the FNP track must have a minimum of one (1) year of direct patient care experience within the past three (3) years prior to entering FNP courses.
  3. Submission of two (2) letters of recommendation from most recent employer (supervisor) and from a professor who can address the applicant's clinical expertise and academic preparation for the program.

Transfer Credits

  • All students who have taken Advanced Physical Assessment within three years will also need to pass a written exam and an OSCE - Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation, on campus, performed in the presence of the FNP faculty, to assess their readiness to begin the clinical rotations in the FNP track.
  • Students who have previously taken Advanced Pharmacology which was not approved by the BRN as a prescriptive authority will need to pass a 45-Hour Advanced Pharmacology Course to transfer in those credits.
