What is a Total Eclipse?

An eclipse occurs when the Earth, the sun, and the moon align. On April 8, 2024, the moon will cross in front of the sun as it passes over Texas, casting its shadow on the Earth. Totality (the period when the moon is perfectly aligned and blocking the sun) will happen in Richardson at 1:43 p.m. and will last about 3 minutes and 38 seconds.1

Eclipses are rare! The next total eclipse over the United States will not occur until 20442. It’s a can’t-miss cosmic spectacle.
