From Thursday, September 27 to Sunday, September 30, thousands of people came to the L.A. Sports Arena to receive free health care at the Care Harbor LA event. An array of treatments were offered, including immunizations, root canals, HIV testing, mammograms and eye exams.
Among health care volunteers were students and faculty from West Coast University’s Los Angeles, Orange County, and Ontario campuses. Hundreds of WCU students participated in the event, along with faculty members from each campus. Throughout the 4-day event, WCU Nursing students triaged thousands of patients and monitored glucose levels. Dental Hygiene students of the Orange County campus administered preventive care, scaling and root planing, and anesthesia to approximately 100 patients. For follow-up dental hygiene care, patients were referred to WCU’s no-cost Dental Hygiene Clinic.
On September 30, West Coast University students also participated in Occupy Health LA, a free health care event in Burbank, California that focused on the fight to end childhood obesity. Occupy Health LA offered free health information, health screenings, a health fitness challenge and fitness demonstrations. Six students from West Coast University’s LA campus provided blood pressure screenings to dozens of participants at the event.
