Third Annual Summer Program Brings Global Perspective to Nursing
Irvine, CA - On June 27, 2012, 36 of West Coast University’s top nursing students stepped off a plane and onto British soil. Over the next 19 days, as part of West Coast University’s summer program in Oxford University, these students gained life-changing perspectives about their profession and themselves.
“The Oxford experience is like nothing else,” said University President Dr. Barry Ryan. “It challenges the students beyond what they imagine they can learn and achieve.” For some students, the chance of being selected to participate in the University’s Oxford program is the differentiating factor for why they chose WCU for their nursing education.
Out of 230 qualified students who applied, 36 were selected and received full scholarships to the program, including travel. While in Oxford, students:
- Worked in research groups on global health topics, and made formal presentations of research findings
- Studied comparative world health care systems, and were exposed to the British National Health Service
- Shadowed floor nurses at a top Oxford hospital
- Visited John Radcliffe Children’s Hospital, one of the UK’s premier hospitals
- Visited historical sites in London and nearby areas (including the Florence Nightingale Museum and Hampton Court Palace)
- Lived and dined together in Oxford dormitories
Both West Coast University and Oxford faculty shared in delivering the curriculum which had clearly defined learning outcomes covering subjects including world perspectives on women and children’s health, disease and injuries. Anna Hemphill, senior nursing faculty from renowned Oxford Brookes University, was a guest lecturer.
Two second-year nursing students summed up their experience: “I learned that I can be an adaptable student and I can thrive in an environment that is foreign to me,” said Krystle Frazier. Craig Tomlinson put it this way, “Oxford taught me how to step out of my comfort zone and since then, I have been able to accomplish things I would have never imagined.”
The Global Studies program underscores West Coast University’s commitment to educating and training successful professionals, expanding both their knowledge and personal perspective on the world. Students come to appreciate that while different world regions have vastly different needs and resources, nurses around the globe are strikingly similar in their goal of achieving quality care for patients.
