WCU Clinical Partner Spotlight: Providence Health

For senior recruiter Ruthann Redfern, it’s not "why" you should work for Providence but “you want to work for Providence.”

“We're the second-largest employer of healthcare workers in California. We have six hospitals currently in Southern California, over 40 clinics and we're expanding. We're joining forces with St. Joseph's Health System in Orange so we're going to be even larger,” Redfern said at a recent career fair at West Coast Unversity-Los Angeles.

Providence also offers a transition-into-practice program three times a year. Modeled after the Versant residency, it's for new grad RNs, but also for experienced RNs looking to get into acute care or change specialties that includes combining hands-on experience in the hospital combined with weekly "core" classes.

Redfern said Providence had open positions for experienced nurses in every unit but was especially looking for critical care and emergency department nurses, telemetry nurses, and labor and delivery nurses.

“Many of the hospitals now are expanding their new grad programs because it is so hard to get that experience and, of course, everybody wants the same candidate,” she said. “There's a lot of hospitals out there so it's very competitive.”
